The President's Cup is a multi-round, all-summer long match play bracket-style tournament, where the best individual match player is left standing.  Each round is typically three weeks long, and you schedule your own match times with your opponent within that three week window. The bracket is limited to 64 players. We use two qualifier rounds if we have more than 64 players to cut the list to 64.  If we have fewer than 64 players, we will fill open slots from a waiting list.

Qualifiers: We have two 18-hole stroke play Qualifiers for the President's Cup similar to the USGA US Amateur and Mid-Amateur format. Players may choose to play in one, both or neither (and join the waiting list).  If we have more than 64 players, the best 64 net score players advance to the first round of match play and are seeded based on their qualifier net performance. IF the second qualifier fills up, we reserve the right to remove players from the second qualifier if they played in the first qualifier and we need to make room for people that have not yet played. If necessary, players will be removed in low net qualifying order.

  • Qualifier #1 - Saturday 17-April - you can sign up for either or both of these events.
  • Qualifier #2 - Saturday 24-April
  • I Can't Play / Standby / Wait List / Sign Up - Sunday 25-April - This is for people that cannot play in EITHER Qualifer. Do not sign up for this if you are playing in a qualifier.

Each qualifier will also include a regular 18-hole tournament with the usual payout structure, KPs, and optional Skins.  Hey, if we're playing 18 holes, we're gonna make it fun!

Wait List: If we have fewer than 64 players in the qualifers, we use the qalifiers to seed the top and bottom of the bracket, and fill in the middle from the Wait List. In past years we have had a total field between 56 and 64 players, including wait list. However, with the recent popularity and interest for golf, we may fill the 64 players from the Qualifiers and not be able to take anyone from the wait list. This is for people that cannot play in EITHER Qualifer. Do not sign up for this if you are playing in a qualifier.

Bracket Seeding:

Each player will be assigned an opponent based on seed (best net score) from the President’s Cup Qualifying Rounds. If there are fewer than 64 in the qualifying tournament, the Qualifiers will be used to fill the top and bottom seeds in the bracket and the waitlist will fill the center of the bracket seeding on a first come/first served basis.

FAQ for Seeding:

Why don't we just use Handicap Index for seeding? This would put the highest handicap players against the lowest handciap players in round one, with stroke differentials between 20-30 strokes. Low handicappers feel this many strokes is an insurmoutnable advantage and that they are at an immediate disadvantage.

Why don't we use flights, and have four sub-brackets, like March Madness, then have a Final Four consisting of the winners of the four flighted brackets? This does the opposite; it guarantees that one player from each flight reaches the final four, and that a low handicapper will have a large stroke differential in the semi-final and potentially final championship match.  Not only that, but instead of letting the four best match players from the entire field make the final four, it constrains it to one from each handicap group. Suppose the best two were in the low handicap group, as they were in 2020 - one of them would have been eliminated prior to the semi-finals.

Why don't we just use random picks?  Because we can do better with qualifiers that seed people by performance and we get to play more golf.
